Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle All Ages

Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle
at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry with Audio Tour
http://www.msichicago.org/whats-here/exhibits/fairycastle/the-exhibit/

Experience the enchantment of a fairy’s dream home in Colleen Moore’s Fairy Castle.

This elaborate miniature house was created by silent film star Colleen Moore in the 1930s, and was donated to the Museum of Science and Industry in 1949.

It will delight you with its tiny treasures—including murals and paintings painted by Walt Disney himself; chandeliers adorned with real diamonds, emeralds and pearls; the tiniest Bible ever to be written, dating back to 1840; and ancient statues more than 2,000 years old.

By 1935 more than 700 individuals had lent their expertise—including surgical instrument lighting specialists, Beverly Hills jewelers and Chinese jade craftsmen. The price tag for this 8'7" x 8'2" x 7'7" foot palace, containing more than 2,000 miniatures, was nearly $500,000.

Eyes of the Dragon

Margaret Leaf
Illustrated by Ed Young

When a huge wall is built around a village for protection, it looks rather plain. So the magistrate of the village decides that a famous dragon painter should decorate the wall. The painter's conditions for the work are that he can paint in his own manner and the village accepts it. The magistrate agrees. However, when the painter finally finishes the magistrate refuses to honor the conditions, because the dragon has no eyes. Despite a warning of what can happen, the magistrate persuades the painter to add the dragon's eyes. After doing so the painter quickly leaves. What happens next is surprising and terrifying; an example of what can happen when one does not honor one's word.

10 Reasons Why Children Need a Garden

Thanks, Loreen, for a great blog! Link to see her book recommendations.

10 Reasons Why Kids Need a Garden

• It’s fun to grow your own food whether it’s just one pot of herbs or a multi-rowed mini-farm.
• Homegrown crops taste great!
• Kids are more likely to eat previously rejected goodies they grow themselves.
• Fresh picked fruits and veggies have more nutrients than produce that’s been sitting around.
• A much greater variety of cultivars can be grown that won’t be found in grocery stores.
• Chemicals can be minimized or avoided.
• Gardening saves money. A few dollars worth of seeds can yield a harvest worth much more.
• Gardens save energy. Many food products must be shipped hundreds or thousands of miles to the grocery store.
• Growing your own food is empowering, teaches valuable skills, and encourages self-sufficiency.
• It’s Spring!

LibriVox Downloadable AudioBooks Public Domain

I'd like to share a Web site called

LibriVox,

which provides free, downloadable audiobooks from the public domain: Users download the audiobooks in MP3 format and listen to them on their computer or copy them onto an MP3 player. According to the site, "LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain and release the audio files back onto the Internet. Our goal is to make all public domain books available as free audiobooks." Users can take advantage of the full catalog of audiobooks -- about a thousand at the time of this writing.

Because the books are in the public domain, users may listen to them as many times as they want and share them with others. If your students have access to MP3 players, providing them with audiobooks is a great way to encourage their appreciation for some fantastic literature. In addition, you can sign up to be a volunteer reader: Find a book of your choosing in the public domain, and record yourself reading it. The site, started in 2005 for the sole purpose of sharing the love of reading, works on a volunteer basis.

LibriVox is a teacher's dream -- a fun tool to encourage the reluctant reader or inspire your already-addicted ones to explore even more great literature. You'll find Aesop's Fables and the works of Shakespeare, James Joyce, and Rudyard Kipling -- the list goes on and on. How about some Edgar Allan Poe to listen to on the way home from school each evening?

Go have a listen, and let us know what you think.
